After months absent from the UK cashback sites, Hilton has now returned to TopCashback.
Hilton cashback rates
Loyal Hilton Honors members need to now take a deep breath. Earning rates are as follows:
Yes, you read it right. The less loyal you are to Hilton (quite literally), the more cashback you will get.
I genuinely don’t understand this. It perhaps makes sense to an accountant somewhere, based on complex mathematical and economic theories (along the lines of the Giffen good, perhaps?). However, at a basic common sense/PR level, it leaves me a touch lost for words.
That said, there’s a reason you probably don’t need to care too much, and that is because cashback is almost certainly not your best option anyway.
So what is the best option?
If you shop via the Avios eStore, you will currently earn 8 Avios per £1 spent:
While if you shop via Virgin ShopsAway, you’ll get 6 Avios per £1 spent:
I value both Virgin miles and Avios at around 1 pence a mile, so clearly they smash the 1% cashback rate, and also look very good against even the 5% cashback rate. Particularly the Avios rate, which is staying until 31 December.
So, unless you’re desperate for cash (or, perhaps, have no or Blue status with Hilton), I’d take the Avios. Remember that you can cash out TopCashback credit to Avios at a rate of 1.05 Avios per 1 pence, so 5% cashback is 5.25 Avios per £1 – clearly not as good as the current Avios eStore rate, but it’s worth keeping an eye on this as it may change.
Before you get too carried away with earning miles via your Hilton stays, don’t forget our analysis of why you probably should not set your Hilton earning preference to airline miles.
