IHG Rewards Club (the loyalty programme for brands like Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn) is selling IHG Rewards Points with a 100% bonus until 8th December 2017, if you buy 20,000 or more.

To be honest, it takes an extremely good deal to ever get me to buy loyalty points. Sometimes though, offers come along that at least give me food for thought – and this is one of them.

Without the bonus, Points usually cost:

  • 1,000 – 10,000 Points for £10.05 ($13.50) per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 Points for £9.30 ($12.50) per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 Points for £8.55 ($11.50) per 1,000 points

With the 100% bonus, at the 26,000-60,000 Point level, you would therefore be paying £4.28 ($5.75) per 1,000 Points.

That’s not necessarily exceptional value when you look at Point redemption costs generally (although you will get the occasional bargain redeeming at the upper levels, or if you use Points for an otherwise expensive time of year like New Year’s Eve). There are 2 elements though that make this sale worth a closer look: PointBreaks and IHG Category 1 hotels.

PointBreaks is the quarterly IHG redemption sale that offers rooms at certain IHG hotels globally for a mere 5,000 points a night. While usually a somewhat random selection, if you can find a hotel that suits, you have yourself a bargain. At the points cost above, you would be paying $28.75 per night, which is a remarkable £21.40!

While slightly less of a bargain than PointBreaks, the IHG Category 1 hotels give you a more predictable and visible range of good value redemptions at 10,000 points per night. Buying points at the above prices, you will be paying $57.50 a night, or £42.80. Again, this is pretty good value and can certainly be worth thinking about if any of the Category 1 hotels can work for you.

Do bear in mind that you won’t earn any Points if you use Points to stay though, so factor that into your calculations – particularly if you have a generous ‘Accelerate’ offer.

If you prefer Hilton to IHG hotels, remember that there’s a similar Points sale on at the moment that allows you to book rooms for as little as £15.99 per night!
