Have you ever wondered how to use British Airways Avios?
Avios is the name BA uses for its air miles these days, and lots of people have some wasting away in an account simply because they’re not sure how to actually make use of them.
The good news is that redeeming Avios for flights is easy – once you know how to do it.
Rather than getting frustrated and concluding that Avios are ‘worthless’ (they’re not, used smartly they can be extremely valuable!), follow the simple steps below and you’ll be an Avios whizz in no time.
Login to your British Airways Executive Club account
Head to the British Airways homepage here and enter your details at the top of the page as shown below:
2. Spending Avios
The screen you see when you login contains lots of information about your account, but we’re not interested in that for now. All you need to do is click the “Executive Club” label at the top of the page and then the “Spending Avios” link in the menu that pops up:
Scroll down on the next page and click the red “Book a Reward Flight” button:
Next, you should see a screen like the one below where you can enter the details of where you would like to fly from/to, when you want to travel, number of passengers, and preferred Class:
Once you’ve filled in the details, click the blue “Get flights” button at the bottom right of the page and you will be presented with your search results:
If flights are available you should see something similar to the above. Choose which outbound flight you want and then scroll down and select your flight home too (or you can just book one way if you prefer).
At this point the Journey Summary pops up, showing how many Avios and how much money your chosen flights will cost.
[This is a good time to mention that using Avios won’t get you a completely free flight – there are always taxes (and often ‘surcharges’ too) to pay on top of the Avios. The amount of cash you have to pay varies dramatically depending on where you’re flying from/to, which Class of travel you want to book, and which airline you want to fly with (you can use Avios to fly with BA’s partner airlines like Cathay Pacific, American Airlines, Iberia, Qatar Airways, etc – not just BA itself!).]
On the next screen you’ll be presented with a range of ‘Avios price options’:
Here you can select whether you want to pay 100% with Avios (except the mandatory taxes/surcharges), or use fewer Avios and more cash instead if you prefer.
Next, check all the details are correct, scroll to the bottom of the page, tick that you agree to the terms and click “Continue”
You’re almost done now!
All that remains is to add the details of whoever is travelling, before scrolling down and clicking through to the final payment screen:
Fill in your card details there, head to the bottom of the page, click “Make Booking” and you’re finished!
Made a mistake?
No problem – you can cancel Avios tickets and get a full refund of both the Avios and cash elements, so long as you cancel within 24 hours of making the booking.
Need to cancel a booking after more than 24 hours?
Again, you’re in luck. One of the very best things about booking with Avios is that you can cancel your ticket and get all your Avios back, plus all the cash back, apart from a £35 fee.
The flexibility this can give you is fantastic.
